Some people do not understand why it matters whether or not the Cubs are in the playoffs and why it matters if they win a World Series. They think the Cubs are just like any other team in baseball. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Let’s get this straight. The Chicago Cubs ARE baseball. They represent everything America’s past time used to be. Our ballpark is just a larger version of the countless community parks around the Midwest where kids pick up their first bat and catch their first fly ball. We don’t need giant jumping scoreboards or silly gimmicks. We just need nine guys, some dirt and grass, and a few bleachers for a good ole time at the ballpark.
Our fans love the Cubs and their personalities, from the announcers in the booth for WGN radio and TV to the bat boys in the dugouts. We support our team through the good times and bad. The Cubs don’t ask the fans to go too far out of their way because they brought the game to the fans by keeping a classic ballpark in a great neighborhood. Our team plays where the people live and that makes us different.
Almost 100 years after the last World Series there are those who say: just give up, your team chokes and always will choke. They say we are blind loyalists who don’t know our players. What we really are is far different.
We understand that the Cubs play for all of those kids who were ever told they couldn’t do it or they aren’t good enough. They play for all the fans who understand that loyalty means showing up at the ballpark even when the year hasn’t gone your way. They play because Cubs fans are welcoming. Whether you’re a baseball genius or a novice fan, we welcome you to Wrigley Field because your knowledge of the game can be worked on but the good times you’ll have will be unforgettable.
As far as winning a World Series, its this simple: There are people across the country who share their love for the Cubs. When the Cubs play in Milwaukee, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, St.Louis, Florida, or Arizona, you know they are there. The Cubs bring us together. It’s about rewarding those families who have waited so long to see it happen. It is about rewarding the best fans in all of sports with a night they have waited too long for. It is about bringing to Chicago and all it’s people a party like they’ve never witnessed. It’s about kids realizing that all things are possible in spite of all the critics. It’s about vindication for past defeats. It is about bringing baseball back to itself.
A Cubs World Series is beyond sports. Whether or not you like sports, whether or not you care, the Cubs represent us all. They represent the doubts we have about ourselves and the missteps we have taken. They stand for traditions our families carry on even though we forgot why. If they can win the World Series it is a message to us all that we can achieve anything, in spite of our critics and our self-doubts. A championship means that the grandest prize in baseball will call Wrigley Field home. It is only fitting because Wrigley Field is baseball’s true home.
I don’t want to hear anything about goats, black cats or that guy named Bartman. There is a simple reason why the Cubs have not won a World Series in 99 years; never during that time were they the best team in baseball. Things are very different this year.
