As you know, I have been documenting the 2009 Cubs season week-by-week in order to truly document the rollercoaster ride that is the MLB season for each team. The endgame in theory was to look back and understand how the Cubs got into the playoffs; the truth is that nobody wants to read a documented story on where the Cubs are heading in October–home.
This season has been extremely frustrating for many reasons beyond wins and losses. Mainly, the fact that this 2009 club has to be the least likable team in recent memory. The two largest babies in this daycare are Milton Bradley and Carlos Zambrano. My thought is that if you are going to be losers, do it with class. Accusing your own fans of racial remarks that never actually happened and calling out your catcher to make light of your terrible pitching are far from being classy.
You may say that I am being a fair-weather fan by giving up on my team before September, but I have stuck by the Cubs through the 0-14 start in 1997, through the monumental collapse in 2004 and through the recent 0-9 playoff drought. I am still a Cubs fan–don’t get me wrong–but a team that plays with no heart and refuses to act with class is too much for me. I am taking a sabbatical from the Cubs until spring training 2010, and I suggest that you do the same.
With that, I will be writing a season in review to sum up all the missteps taken this year by the front office and the players. I will leave you with three things I see that need to be changed going into 2010.
1) Fire Lou Piniella
2) Fire Jim Hendry
3) Cut Milton Bradley
