Hello my fellow Average Chicagoans, I hope you are keeping up on the great perspective we have provided so far on the Entertainment Scene in Chicago. On that note, I wanted to give a critique of the Will… sorry, Sears Tower Sky Deck.
Waiting in line you got the sense that it may take half the day to stand 103 floors over Wacker Drive. However, the line moves fairly quickly through security, and then you are escorted through a walking timeline of the great history of Chicago. This trail of years past ends in a theater in which you are shown a reader’s digest version of post-Industrial Revolution Chicago. I fancy myself a well educated citizen of Chicago but there are a few facts that are not written in the history books, I won’t spoil them.
From one line to another you snake your way towards the elevator bank, passing tourists who are baffled by pictures of Oprah and Michael Jordan. Being there you can’t help but wander your eyes around the room, looking for what catches the eyes of people all around the world.
Continuing to move towards the elevators your imagination wanders, and your legs begin to stiffen. Making it to the first bank of elevators is your moral victory, as you have one more line and elevator to reach the Sky Deck. You get off the first elevator at the 99th floor, where the magical view was the main attraction just 3 years prior. Now people merely glance at the windows in passing as they shuffle their feet in line to the Sky Deck.
Waiting in line for the second elevator your imagination really begins to run wild, and the 4 floor ride is lighting quick. Once you finally reach the Sky Deck, you are rewarded with a view that completely surpasses your expectations. It personally is is unlike any other I’ve seen. They recently put up signs that mark Chicago landmarks so you are able to identify them looking in any direction, giving you a beautiful, informed look around our gorgeous city.
Walking onto the new ledges is almost surreal in that the experience holds a special quality, rarity. No other place can you look past your feet 103 floors down onto the greatest city in the world. The idea to renovate the Sears Tower Sky Deck is one that will indeed be viewed as a good one. Hell, I was number 1,687,444 to reach the 103rd floor since the renovation, at 16 bucks a pop, you do the math.
I highly recommend going to the Sky Deck for a date, family day or just bumming around the city. Check this link out for more information on The Sky Deck. http://www.the-skydeck.com/
