The Story:
Last week had it all for the Chicago Cubs; close games, walk-offs, trades, drubbings, lineup changes, All-Stars and possible new owners. Despite the turbulent week the Cubs managed to play some good baseball as well, going 5-2 during last week, three of which, against the Brewers, may turn out to be huge down the stretch. The box scores from this week tell us all what we should already know, this team can not win when in the two losses they scored a total of only TWO runs combined. However, as I mentioned before, there is more to this story than what happened on the field.

Ted Lilly reminded us all why he is the lone representative of the Cubs at the 80th All-Star Game in St Louis as he pitched a gem on Sunday. Lilly (8-6) beat Milwaukee, 8-2, holding the Brewers to two runs on nine hits over 6 1/3 innings. He struck out nine and did not walk a batter, the seventh start this year in which he has not issued a free pass.

In a move that many Cubs fans have been clamoring for since his arrival, Alfonso Soriano, batting .226 overall and .173 in his past 36 games, was dropped from the top spot in the order to sixth and replaced by Kosuke Fukudome in the one-hole in the Cubs’ 11-2 loss to the Brewers. “And this isn’t a temporary thing”, Lou Piniella said.

Things could be getting better still for this Cubs team. On Monday, the Cubs could get three players back from the disabled list in third baseman Aramis Ramirez, outfielder Reed Johnson and reliever Angel Guzman. To make room on the roster, there will be some tough decisions. Piniella said he’s considering going with 11 pitchers instead of the usual 12 until the All-Star break next week.
