The Story:
Now that it is officially summer, baseball season is getting into full stride and as we move along I am going to document this Chicago Cubs 2009 season week by week in order to truly appreciate the peaks and valleys of a professional baseball team. Luckily for the Cubs and their fans, this week was truly a peak moment in this season.
Anybody who truly believes that “a win is a win” cannot fathom how important this week was to this Cubs team. Yes, the Cubs did win five out of six games this week with one postponed (White Sox) but the timing in which they came and the nature in which they were won makes these five games mean more then just a blue W flag hanging in center and another W in the win column. This week is exactly what this team needed and is exactly what their fans were expecting all season long, clutch hitting and intensity to match the talent listed on the everyday lineup.
Here are some staggering statistics that show how extra ordinary this week truly was. With the exception of Sunday’s 6-2 victory over the Indians and the 4-1 loss against the White Sox earlier in the week, the Cubs have won every other game in their last at bat. The Cubs have trailed in a little over 90% of those contests. They have also scored 15 runs in the 7th inning or later this last week, almost 75% of their total runs scored. It seems that finally our boys have remembered how to hit in clutch situations.
Things were indeed looking up for this team when hard luck pitcher Randy Wells finally got rewarded with his first win of the season after 4 other quality outings that resulted in either a loss or no-decision. Derek Lee is the hottest Cub of late and with the near return of Aramis Ramirez, this team should be able to put themselves in a good position to be relevant in September.
As I alluded to earlier, these games will act as more than just wins in my estimation, they could act the turning point that has recharged the swagger of this 2009 ballclub.
