The Results:
7/16 W vs. Nationals 6-2
7/17 W vs. Nationals 3-1
7/18 W vs. Nationals 6-5
7/19 W vs. Nationals 11-3

The Story:
The Cubs received what they greatly needed this week, a breather. Even Ted Lilly did not see action in the 80th All-Star game in St Louis in the earlier part of the week. I’m sure there was no better sight to Sweet Lou than seeing a 4-game series to start the second half against the worst team in baseball, the Nationals.

Good teams beat the teams they are supposed to on a regular basis and that is exactly what the Cubs did this week by sweeping the awful Nat’s. If good teams win the games they are supposed to then great teams beat the good teams, I don’t think the Cubs are quite there yet but key series against quality clubs in the second half will surely help us find out. The Return of Aramis Ramirez proved to be exactly what the Cubs needed. Alfonso Soriano is staring to get dangerous again, he has hit two homers in as many games, and we all know what type of numbers Alfi can produce when he is clicking.

Don’t get too excited Cub fans, after all it was the Nationals. The first real test of merit in the second half will come tomorrow as they travel to Philly to take on the defending Champs in a 3-game set.

The Cubs have gained some ground on the rival Cardinals and are only 2 games back at 47-43. The tide seems to be turning for this club, but after all, we have seen this before.
