It’s the same old song and dance, start slow, gain just enough momentum to become mediocre and then crumble under pressure. This recipe for disaster has plagued the Bears in at least half their games in 2009 which makes you wonder, is Lovie Smith properly getting his team ready to compete every Sunday?
When Green Bay went up 13-0 in the second quarter I’m sure we all thought this was going to be an ugly one, miraculously the Bears fought back to go into the half on the arm of Jay Cutler down just 13-7. Cutler seems bi-polar, some drives he looks flustered or plain not interested and on others, he looks to be confident, poised and accurate. The supporting cast surrounding Cutler may have a bit to do with that.
The Bears defense did not do too terribly overall but you could tell from Ryan Grant’s 60+ yard run in the first series that this D is out of place more often than not. Grant finished with 137 yards on the ground and 24 through the air. The passing D showed up on this day holding Aaron Rodgers to under 200 yards and no total touchdowns.
Tied for the league lead entering the game, Cutler now has 22 interceptions after getting picked off twice. He did throw for 209 yards and two touchdowns even though Devin Hester missed the game with a calf injury, but it’s hard to win when a team racks up 13 penalties for 109 yards.
Jay Cutler, who had four interceptions in a season-opening loss at Green Bay, threw a costly one with a 14-13 lead early in the fourth quarter. Collins picked off a pass to Johnny Knox and returned it 32 yards to the Chicago 11, setting up a 1-yard scoring run by Grant. Rodgers hit Jennings for the 2-point conversion, making it 21-14 with 12:39 left in the game, and the Packers swept the Bears for the first time since 2003.
The cherry on top this week has to be Lovie Smith’s poor clock management, on a series that saw an unfocused or disciplined team dig themselves into a third and 26 hole, Lovie challenged a play that would have gotten the Bears a long first down, the problem was that he had already burned a timeout and still decided to challenge the play. The result you ask, two burnt timeouts with no time coming off the clock.
I was almost happy to see this terrible coaching take place because only a move like that can hopefully get the attention of the Bears brass in order for them to dare I say…Take Action.
