If you have noticed, recently, this food chain entering your community, it is by no accident. The steadily growing fast food, burger & hot dog chain, Five Guys Burgers and Fries, has become increasingly popular with burger enthusiasts and the young folks around town. I particularly noticed the restaurant when it opened in the Rogers Park neighborhood near Loyola University this summer. I wanted to see what this place has to offer so I took the time to check it out and see what makes Five Guys so unique.
They keep it simple here. There are two sizes of burger, a single and double (called “little” if it’s a single), and you can add bacon and/or cheese. It’s not the kind of place that’s big on frou-frou options. Your condiment choices however, are plentiful. Mushrooms, green peppers, hot sauce and relish are just a few of the garnishes you can add.
Five Guys also offers hot dogs, to which you may also add the aforementioned combination of both bacon and cheese if you’re so daring.
Then there are the fries. You have two options here – regular or large and plain or Cajun. The Cajun is much like seasoning salt with a kick – pretty tasty but high enough in sodium you shouldn’t add any yourself. The fries are from fresh potatoes and the “regular” size is a great deal like most establishments’ “large.” And you can actually see the grease forming at the bottom of the bag they are served in – that is a compliment in fry-language.
The crowd here is mostly Loyola students and faculty. It’s a loud place with black and white checkers everywhere complimented by red accents. It’s friendly, casual, cheap and clean – what more can you ask for in a burger joint?
